I began writing children’s books because I wanted to see stories where Black children and Black families are centered, featured, and fully human. My goal has always been to affirm our identities and experiences, while also expanding the types of stories we see about Black life in children’s literature. I want young readers to encounter a wide range of representations: varied family structures, cultural practices, personalities, interests, and possibilities so they can recognize themselves and also imagine beyond what has historically been published.
